I, George Dubya
I.
I think there is some methodology in my travels
There's no question that the minute I got elected,
the storm clouds on the horizon
were getting nearly directly overhead.
There may be some tough times here in America.
But this country has gone through tough times before,
and we're going to do it again.
There's no cave deep enough for America,
or dark enough to hide.
If you're sick and tired of the politics
of cynicism and polls and principles,
come and join this campaign.
I understand how difficult
It is to put food on your family.
Families is where our nation finds hope,
where wings take dream.
When I was coming up
it was a dangerous world
and you knew exactly
who they were,
It was Us vs. Them,
and it was clear who them was.
Today, we are not so sure
who the they are,
but we know they're there.
It's a world of madmen and uncertainty
and potential mental losses
We're concerned about AIDS
inside our White House—
make no mistake about it.
And, you know, hopefully,
condoms will work,
but it hasn't worked.
I also understand how tender
the free enterprise system can be.
It would be a mistake for
the United States Senate
to allow any kind of human cloning
to come out of that chamber.
We have nothing to fear but—
Ourselves.
II.
I was proud the other day
when both Republicans
and Democrats stood with me
in the Rose Garden to announce
their support for a clear
statement of purpose:
you disarm, or we will.
I recognize the fallacy of humans
Recently I met with the finance minister
of the Palestinian Authority,
was very impressed by his grasp of finances.
Keep good relations with the Grecians.
Kosovians can move back in.
Anyway, I'm so thankful, and so gracious—
I'm gracious that my brother Jeb is concerned
about the hemisphere as well.
The fact that he relies on facts—
says things that are not factual—
are going to undermine his campaign
The Senator has got to understand
He can’t have it both ways.
He can’t take the high horse and
Then claim the low road.
I know the human being
and fish can coexist peacefully.
You got blacks there, too?
There's an old saying in Tennessee—
I know it's in Texas,
probably in Tennessee—
that says, fool me once
shame on—shame on you.
Fool me—
you can't get fooled again
I think the American people—
I hope the American–
I don't think, let me—
I hope the American people trust me.
III.
It’s clearly a budget
It’s got a lot of numbers
A tax cut is really one of
the anecdotes to coming out
of an economic illness
It’s your money.
You paid for it.
It's going to require
numerous IRA agents
There’s no doubt in my mind
I know what I believe.
I will continue to articulate
what I believe and what I believe—
I believe what I believe is right.
I'm also not very analytical.
You know I don't spend a lot of time
thinking about myself,
about why I do things.
There's no doubt in my mind
that we should allow
the world worst leaders
to hold America hostage,
to threaten our peace,
to threaten our friends
and allies with the world's worst weapons.
See, we love—we love freedom.
That's what they didn't understand.
They hate things; we love things.
They act out of hatred;
we don't seek revenge,
we seek justice out of love.
Jesus is my favorite philosopher
It is clear our nation is reliant
upon big foreign oil. More and more
of our imports come from overseas.
We need an energy bill
that encourages consumption
Our priorities is our faith
IV.
You're free. And freedom is beautiful.
And, you know, it'll take time to restore chaos
And order—order out of chaos, but we will
Redefining the role of the United States
from enablers to keep the peace to enablers
to keep the peace from peacekeepers
is going to be an assignment
You see, even though it's an uncertain world,
we're certain of some things.
We're certain there are madmen in this world,
and there's terror, and there's missiles
and I'm certain of this, too:
I'm certain to maintain the peace
we better have a military of high morale,
and I'm certain that under this administration,
morale in the military is dangerously low.
I do think we need for a troop
to be able to house his family.
That's an important part of
building morale in the military.
First, let me make it very clear,
poor people aren't necessarily killers.
Just because you happen to be not rich
doesn't mean you're willing to kill.
For every fatal shooting,
there were roughly three non-fatal shootings.
And, folks, this is unacceptable in America.
It's just unacceptable.
And we're going to do something about it
I'd rather have them sacrificing on behalf
of our nation than, you know, endless
hours of testimony on congressional hill.
When I'm the president, we're going to
have emergency-room care,
we're going to have gag orders.
There ought to be limits to freedom
Those of us who spent time in the agricultural sector
and in the heartland, we understand how unfair
the death penalty is.
My pro-life position is
I believe there's life.
It's not necessarily based in religion.
I think there's a life there,
therefore the notion of life,
liberty and pursuit of happiness.
The reason we start a war
is to fight a war,
win a war,
thereby causing no more war!
V.
I understand that the unrest
in the Middle East creates
unrest throughout the region.
There's nothing more deep
than recognizing
Israel's right to exist.
That's the most deep thought of all. ...
I can't think of anything more deep than that right.
My administration has been calling
upon all the leaders in the—
in the Middle East to do everything
they can to stop the violence,
to tell the different parties involved
that peace will never happen
They said, 'You know, this issue
doesn't seem to resignate with the people.'
And I said, you know something?
Whether it resignates or not
doesn't matter to me,
because I stand for doing
what's the right thing,
and what the right thing
is hearing the voices
of people who work
not some focus group
This administration is doing
everything we can to end
the stalemate in an efficient way.
We're making the right decisions
to bring the solution to an end.
VI.
Our nation must come together to unite.
It's important for young men and women
who look at the Nebraska champs
to understand that quality of life
is more than just blocking shots
So on behalf of a well-oiled unit of people
who came together to serve something greater
than themselves, congratulations.
In other words, I don't think people
ought to be compelled to make the decision
which they think is best for their family.
The public education system in America
is one of the most important foundations
of our democracy. After all, it is where children
from all over America learn to be responsible citizens,
and learn to have the skills necessary
to take advantage of our fantastic opportunistic society
I'm thrilled to be here in the bread basket of America
because it gives me a chance to remind our fellow citizens
that we have an advantage here in America—
we can feed ourselves. Brie and cheese.
Neither in French nor in English nor in Mexican.
The law I sign today directs new funds and new focus
to the task of collecting vital intelligence on terrorist threats
and on weapons of mass production.
If a person doesn't have the capacity
that we all want that person to have,
I suspect hope is in the far distant future, if at all.
It would be so much easier to be a dictatorship
I am mindful not only of preserving
executive powers for myself,
but for predecessors as well.
The federal government and the state government
must not fear programs who change lives,
but must welcome those faith-based programs
for the embetterment of mankind.
VII.
Rarely is the question asked:
Is our children learning?
You teach a child to read,
and he or her will be able
to pass a literacy test.
As governor of Texas, I have set high standards
for our public schools, and I have met those standards.
They misunderestimated me.
We cannot let terrorists and rogue nations
hold this nation hostile or hold our allies hostile
The war on terror involves Saddam Hussein
because of the nature of Saddam Hussein,
the history of Saddam Hussein,
and his willingness to terrorize himself.
People say, how can I help on this war against terror?
How can I fight evil? You can do so by mentoring a child;
by going into a shut-in's house and say I love you
There's only one person who hugs the mothers and the widows,
the wives and the kids upon the death of their loved one.
Others hug but having committed the troops,
I've got an additional responsibility to hug
and that's me and I know what it's like.
We ended the rule of one of history's worst tyrants,
and in so doing, we not only freed the American people,
we made our own people more secure.
Now, there are some who would like to rewrite history—
revisionist historians is what I like to call them.
When Iraq is liberated, you will be treated,
tried, and persecuted as a war criminal.
This may sound a little West Texan to you,
but I like it. When I'm talking about
—when I'm talking about myself,
and when he's talking about myself
all of us are talking about me.
There was no malfeance involved.
This was an honest disagreement
about accounting procedures. ...
There was no malfeance,
no attempt to hide anything.
Oftentimes, we live in a processed world—
you know, people focus on the process
and not results.
I promise you I will listen to
what has been said here,
even though I wasn't here.
There's no such thing as legacies.
At least, there is a legacy, but I'll never see it
This is Preservation Month.
I appreciate preservation.
It's what you do when you run for president.
You gotta preserve.
I think we agree, the past is over.
